2008/07/04 News...
As most of you know by now, our server suffered a massive disk failure last month. We lost a good deal of our files, configurations, etc, and we are slowly rebuilding things (like this site).
I've purchased a managed hosting account for the idlemonkeys ircd & website, but I am working with Cyon to try and get the old hardware/network set up in order to continue hosting the numerous challenge sites and personal websites we had before. The cost is $20/mo, and I've received donations to keep it running for ~6 months now. If you want to contribute, please paypal shaun.guth on the gmail domain.
We transitioned our ircd from Unreal to Inspircd. We also transitioned our services to Atheme. Unfortunately, all previously registered Nicknames/channels/etc have to be re-registered.
When we're not idle...
Idlemonkeys is a chat network with discussion centered around code-hacking and technology (well, it is when we actually chat :-)) If you'd like to come chat with us, just hit the Chat Now button up top, or grab your favorite IRC client and connect to our network at irc.idlemonkeys.net/6667 (use port 7000 for SSL encryption)
If you've never used IRC before, here are our recommendations for a suitable chat client.
- For Mac OS X users, check out Colloquy
- For Windows users, try Silverex X-Chat
- For Linux users, you can't beat XChat
- And for awesome, use irssi
Once you've chosen a client and connected, use /list to choose a channel and start chatting!
Evolution of the monkey
Before we became Idlemonkeys, this network was known as TopGamers. That name was the result of slyfx and l8nite attempting to describe the community they helped create with their challenge sites: aspectgames and slyfx. Over time, the original member challenge sites from TopGamers have fallen into disrepair, migrated away or disappeared entirely. Though there are still some vestiges of the challenge sites living in the network today, the majority of the community is built on tech-oriented discussion and long-time friendship.
The name TopGamers barely applied to the scope of the network to begin with (Every once in awhile, a newbie will join and ask what we think about the latest-greatest PC/Xbox/PS2 game, and we have to explain what the 'Gamers' in TopGamers means). The new network name, Idlemonkeys, is more generic and suited to our super-sapien ability to stay silent for many hours at a time.
